To open the bonnetyou must first pull the bonnet release lever located in the passenger side foot well:
Next, moving to the front of the car you need to pull the secondary release lever. Pull it towards you .
To secure the bonnet you must next unclip the bonnet stay and locate it in the hole.
Once secured this is what you should see: (Remember you don't need to touch anything during your test The engine bay is usually a very hot and dirty place with moving parts always take care.)
1 Engine Coolant Reservoir
2 Dipstick
3 Brake Fluid Reservoir
4 Windscreen Washer Reservoir
1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe checking of oil level against the minimum/maximum markers after having wiped it clean first with a tissue/rag.
2. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir, check level against Max/Min markings.
3. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Identify reservoir and explain how to check level. (visual check no max/min)
4. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Identify min/max level markings on plastic reservoir.
1. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
2. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Manufacturer’s guide ( car Manual), use a reliable pressure gauge,( petrol Station?) check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget sparetyre, remember to refit valve caps.
3. Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working.
Operate switch, then explain that you would need to walk round vehicle and make sure that both the side lights, head lights and tail lights are working properly. ( You don't need to actually walk round as this is only a "tell me" question.)
4. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Operate the hazard warning switch and walk around the car checking that all 6 indicator bulbs are working.(2-front, 2-side repeaters, 2-rear)
5. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Turn on ignition (not the engine).Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help.( The examiner should offer assistance with this question so you should ask him to stand at the rear of the car and check the functioning of the lights whilst you press the brake pedal.) DO NOT TURN ON ENGINE
1. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
2. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Demonstrate by applying parking brake that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel.( You can feel the resistance as you pull it up).
3. Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
4. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
Check is carried out by pushing the horn
5. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable
6. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Turn on ignition( not the engine ) Operate switch by pulling the windscreen wiper control stalk towards you. Water will squirt onto screen and the wipers will wipe automatically.
7. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration Fan speed depends on how misted up the car is the worse it is the higher the speed needed. On my car fan setting 2 is fine for keeping mist at bay. Temperature ideally on warm and the air should be moving over the windscreen rather than pointing to the floor or your face. To clear rear screen press the heated rear window button ( Picture of a rectangle with arrows pointing up through it)
8. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them. (No need to exit vehicle).
Turn on headlights (twist end of stalk 2 clicks away from you) then twist the inner switch away from you by 2 clicks to turn on rear fog lights Check warning light is on. Explain use: (taken from the highway code:)
226 You MUST use headlights when visibilityis seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).
235 When driving in fog you shoulduse your lights as required (see Rule 226) *keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front. Rear lights can give a false sense of security *beable to pull up well within the distance you can see clearly. This isparticularly important on motorways and dual carriageways, as vehiclesare travelling faster *use your windscreen wipers and demisters *beware of other drivers not using headlights *not accelerate to get away from a vehicle which is too close behind you *checkyour mirrors before you slow down. Then use your brakes so that yourbrake lights warn drivers behind you that you are slowing down *stopin the correct position at a junction with limited visibility andlisten for traffic. When you are sure it is safe to emerge, do sopositively and do not hesitate in a position that puts you directly inthe path of approaching vehicles
236 You MUST NOTuse front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced(see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure yourbrake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
9. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system (orange light on the left)
10. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Operate switch (by pulling the light control stalk towards you. a click will be heard to turn off pull towards you again.), check with main beam warning light (blue)
